DAW Foundation: the concept
DAW Foundation realizes via its flexible innovative greenhouse structures on open water, a Cradle to Cradle ©-ecosystem for the food supply of large cities on the water. The project is named after the most nutricious waters in the world: Deep Arctic Water.
Currently, the DAW Foundation is the only organization that is able to supply the complete technology and project management with regard to greenhouses on open water. Across the world, the grounds near major cities are becoming more expensive, therefore people are looking for new solutions,
including greenhouses on large open water.
There were several technical problems for greenhouse on water before DAW Foundation, in collaboration with its partners, came up with the solution in 2008. The theory of a greenhouse on open water is actually not complicated; the greenhouse is used as a semi-submergible surface on the seawater, rivers or lakes.
The greenhouse structure provides its own energy and produces fresh water by using the most advanced technology.
In short, DAW Foundation realizes sustainable food producing greenhouse structures which are groundbreaking, requested internationally and globally exportable.
The real innovation is the high efficiency of the entire supply chain in combination with vertical farming and the use of the Cradle to Cradle principle. In the greenhouse, we make use of multiple layers of production. In the first layer fish farms are located. This relates to the lowermost parts of the structure.
In the overlying second layer, algea are grown. Other sectors of this layer are utilized for the production of (among other things) seaweed and sea lettuce for consumption.
The third layer, we use hydroponics based on freshwater. The one above intermediate layers is available from stalls for pig and chicken farms. These intermediate layers may also be used for insect farms. Finally, at the highest layer regular European and Asian vegetables and flowers are grown.
